The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:08): I move:

(1)That this House notes that the Children's Cancer Institute, established over 40 years ago, is Australia's only independent medical research institute wholly dedicated to curing childhood cancer and pioneering safer and more effective treatments for children and adolescents.

(2)That this House commends the institute's internationally recognised work in translational research, which bridges laboratory science and clinical care to directly improve patient outcomes.

(3)That this House acknowledges that over 1,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer in Australia each year, with cancer remaining the leading cause of disease-related death in children.

(4)That this House further notes that:

(a)more than 2,000 children are undergoing cancer treatment at any one time and that, tragically, around 200 of these children will not survive their illness each year; and

(b)the Zero Childhood Cancer Program has received significant support from the Federal Government and further acknowledges the critical role of philanthropic contributions in advancing the institute's life-saving research and care.

(5)That this House recognises that:

(a)two-thirds of childhood cancer survivors experience long-term and often severe side effects from treatment, including cardiac damage, infertility, chronic pain, developmental challenges and secondary cancers; and

(b)the Zero program is now available to all children in Australia diagnosed with cancer, regardless of cancer type, stage, risk or geographic location, ensuring access to world leading personalised treatment for children in regional and rural communities.

(6)That this House further commends the Children's Cancer Institute for its leadership in co-delivering the national Zero Childhood Cancer program, which uses advanced genomic profiling and precision medicine to match children with targeted treatment options and which has enrolled over 2,000 participants across the country.

(7)That this House pays tribute to the researchers, clinicians, families and donors whose tireless work through the Children's Cancer Institute is helping to transform survival rates, from single digits to over 80 per cent in many childhood cancers, and bring hope to children and families across the nation.

Motion agreed to.
